New mural on display at Paxson Elementary

“Each piece in here has facts and history,” Missoula artist Josh Quick said on a rainy Tuesday. “It’s like a whimsical educational piece.”

Quick’s talking about Paxson Elementary School’s new 40 foot-long mural, a recently installed art piece on the school’s playground that features a scene packed with colorful cartoon drawings with nods to Montana and Missoula’s history embedded throughout.

The mural is mounted on metal sheets — its bright colors and scenes face south and can easily be seen from Paxson’s southside cross streets.

For Julie Robitaille, Paxson’s principal, the mural is something that’s going to beautify the neighborhood and school for years to come without deteriorating, even when current Paxson families move on.

“Josh’s mural does a beautiful job of focusing on Paxson, but then it goes out and comes in with Missoula and Montana history,” she said.
