Gianforte Seeks Applicants for Flathead County Judicial Vacancy

Gov. Greg Gianforte is accepting applications and nominations for an upcoming district court vacancy in Montana’s Eleventh Judicial District in Flathead County.

The vacancy is expected to arise because District Court Judges Amy Eddy and Dan Wilson are running against each other for one seat on the Montana Supreme Court.

The chief justice of the Montana Supreme Court notified Gianforte of the impending vacancy, beginning the process to appoint a replacement to serve the remainder of the term.

Qualified applicants must be lawyers in good standing who meet the legal requirements to serve as a Montana district court judge.

Applications are due by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2026, and must be submitted both electronically and in hard copy. The applications will be made available to the public.

Beginning Sept. 30, the public will have an opportunity to submit letters of support or other comments regarding the applicants. That comment period will remain open through Oct. 30.

Applicants must receive at least three letters of support to be considered for appointment by the governor.
