Right now, if someone living on a reservation in Montana wanted to access addiction treatment, they would likely have to leave their community and possibly the state to get the care they need.

On Tuesday, tribal leaders from across the state gathered in Great Falls, where they urged a new commission of lawmakers and state health leaders to invest in a regional Indigenous treatment facility.

Established by the 2023 Legislature, the statewide Behavioral Health System for Future Generations Commission is tasked with recommending to the governor how a historic $300 million investment should be spent. The group is led by Rep. Bob Keenan, R-Bigfork, and state health department Director Charlie Brereton. While previous meetings focused on behavioral health in the criminal justice system, developmental disabilities and children’s issues, Tuesday’s meeting was dedicated to understanding the behavioral health landscape in Indian Country.
