State Sen. Jeff Welborn, of Dillon, joins race for Public Service Commission

Republican state Sen. Jeff Welborn of Dillon is running for the Montana Public Service Commission, saying he wants to stand up for ratepayers and ensure Montana’s energy sector remains strong and reliable.

Welborn filed for the District 3 seat Wednesday, joining Republicans Suzzann Nordwick of Butte and Rob Elwood of Harlowton in the race. No Democrats have filed yet but candidates have until March 11 to make bids official.

Welborn said his top three priorities if elected are to protect customers from unfair rate increases, promote investments in Montana’s energy sector that result in reliability, and ensure voices in rural communities — farmers and ranchers in particular — are elevated in the commission’s work.

The PSC regulates the rates and service quality for investor-owned, monopoly electric, natural gas, water, wastewater and legacy telecommunications companies. It is one of the smallest agencies in Montana state government.
