Fire awakens family in Townsend Avenue home in Helena

A smoke alarm alerted the sleeping occupants of a single-family home to a fire in their residence at about 7:30 a.m. Monday at 1803 Townsend Ave., Helena Fire Department Chief Jon Campbell said.

Assistant Fire Chief Mike Chambers said the residents were awoken by the sound of their smoke detectors and tried to put out the fire themselves.

“They activated 911 and were able to exit the structure,” Chambers said in an email.

According to preliminary information, the fire started on the main level, got into the wall and then went up to the attic space, Chambers said.
