The funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will be used to buy 8,458 tons of asphalt from Helena Sand and Gravel, the sole bidder, commissioners were told.
The performance grade 70-28 asphalt will be used primarily for paving the large parking areas east and west of the Fairgrounds Complex Building.
Jesse Whitford, Lewis and Clark County construction coordinator, said the Lewis and Clark County Fairgrounds, Lewis and Clark County Public Works and city of Helena are working on this project in partnership in an interlocal agreement.
A county official said in February the city of Helena would help with prep work for the parking lot and would do the paving, also to be paid with federal funds.
