South Dakota House advances bill requiring biological sex on birth certificates
A bill that would require the gender marker on birth certificates to be the biological sex at birth was revived in the South Dakota House of Representatives today to be sent to the Senate after a spirited debate on the floor.
The House advanced House Bill 1076 on a 39-31 vote.
Rep. Fred Deutsch’s motion to put the bill on the House of Representatives’ calendar was approved 40-30 and was added to the end of the agenda Wednesday, a day after it was narrowly defeated in committee after impassioned testimony from opponents who say the bill was discriminatory to transgender and non-binary South Dakotans.
