Public comment sought on Larabee Hat Vegetation Project south of Elliston

The Helena Ranger District is seeking public comment on the Larabee Hat Vegetation Project, south of Elliston, that aims to restore forests and watersheds and address hazardous wildfire fuel loads.

“Since March, we’ve refined our analyses based on field data and public comments,” Helena District Ranger Kathy Bushnell said in an email.

She said the public comment will help the forest service “refine our proposed activities” and help “manage these public lands and protect Elliston and neighboring communities.”

The Larabee Hat Vegetation Project would use a combination of management activities, including prescribed fire and timber harvest. Prescribed fire and other fuels treatments will give firefighters more response options in the event of a wildfire south of Elliston, forest officials said Timber harvest from this project would contribute to maintaining timber industry infrastructure, including support to small businesses.
