Martinez takes top editor job at Montana Standard, Independent Record

Thomas R. Martinez, an award-winning writer, editor, designer and photographer who has led newsrooms in four states across more than 30 years in journalism, was introduced Monday as managing editor for the Helena Independent Record and the Montana Standard.

Martinez has spent nearly all of the past decade in Texas, most recently as the founding managing editor for the Fort Worth Report, where he helped shape a digital-first newsroom that has grown from six initial journalists to more than 20 today. He has also led newsrooms in Colorado, Wyoming and Arizona across three decades in journalism.

“I’m honored to be named the next managing editor for the local news organizations in Butte and Helena,” Martinez said. “I think there is incredible news to uncover and stories to write about people. I look forward to the opportunity.”

Martinez’s experience as a top editor includes a pair of stints covering five years at The Victoria Advocate in Texas, as well as the Rawlins Daily Times in Wyoming and the Craig Free Press and Post Independent of Glenwood Springs in Colorado. He began his news career as
