Update: 3 injured in helicopter crash in Jefferson County

Three people were injured Sunday when the helicopter they were in crashed by Basin Creek in a remote area in the mountains near Boulder, officials said.

A father, son and friend of the son were aboard the privately owned R-44 Robinson helicopter when it crashed. Jefferson County Sheriff Tom Grimsrud said two suffered serious injuries and the third suffered less serious injuries.

Their names were not released.

The helicopter was flying out of a cabin the family owned by the creek near Three Brothers mountain in northwestern Jefferson County and was having trouble gaining altitude and was battling gusty winds, Grimsrud said. The Federal Aviation Administration said early Monday the Robinson R-44 helicopter crashed under unknown circumstances.

The crash was reported at 4:20 p.m.
