Senator Daines Tours MSU’s Cutting-Edge Quantum Research Facility
Senator Steve Daines (R-Mont.) visited Montana State University’s state-of-the-art quantum research facility on Halloween, highlighting the university’s advancements in technology and the critical role quantum research plays in Montana’s economy.
“It’s a blast to be back at my alma mater, MSU, on Halloween, and see all the great additions made to the university,” Daines said. “Quantum research is at the forefront of today’s technological advancements and supports hundreds of Montana jobs. This quantum research facility at MSU will help our students learn critical skills for the workforce and contributes to America’s position as a global leader in technology, and I was glad to visit.”
Daines has been a national advocate for quantum research. In February 2025, he introduced the DOE Quantum Leadership Act, which authorizes more than $2.5 billion for quantum research at the U.S. Department of Energy. Earlier this year, in June 2025, he also introduced a resolution celebrating 100 years of American quantum innovation, which passed unanimously in the Senate.
The visit underscores Daines’ ongoing commitment to promoting science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education in Montana while supporting federal initiatives that strengthen U.S. leadership in emerging technologies.
At MSU, the senator toured laboratories where students and faculty are conducting research in quantum computing, quantum sensing, and other next-generation technologies poised to impact national security, computing, and industrial applications.
“Montana’s students are gaining critical skills here that will prepare them for jobs in a high-tech economy,” Daines added.
The senator’s visit comes as federal investment in quantum research accelerates, with Montana positioned to play a key role in the national effort to advance quantum science and technology.
