Commissioner Dismisses Democrat Complaint Against Gianforte
Montana’s Commissioner of Political Practices, Chris Gallus, dismissed a complaint that accused Governor Greg Gianforte of misusing taxpayer funds for his reelection campaign. The complaint, jointly lodged by Democratic candidates Ryan Busse and Raph Graybill, alleged that Gianforte utilized state resources through postcards sent to Montana taxpayers to promote his candidacy.
In a detailed 12-page order, Commissioner Gallus ruled that the postcards, distributed by the Montana Department of Revenue, fell under Gianforte’s official duties and did not constitute improper campaign promotion. The communications reminded recipients to apply for a property tax rebate, emphasizing a policy signed into law by the governor, with rebates potentially reaching up to $675. Gallus underscored that the messaging did not solicit support for Gianforte’s reelection bid and referenced precedents to support his decision.
Responding to the dismissal, Kaitlin Price, spokesperson for the governor’s office, criticized the complaint as “desperate” and “hyper-partisan”.
The complaint also raised concerns about the postcards’ printing process, suggesting ties to Jake Eaton, a Republican strategist and Gianforte’s campaign manager, which could violate Montana’s public funds use regulations. However, Commissioner Gallus clarified that the postcards were printed by Alphagraphics of Helena, an entity unaffiliated with Eaton.
Recent polling data has consistently shown Governor Gianforte maintaining a strong lead over his Democratic challenger. According to a June poll conducted by Public Opinion Strategies, Gianforte enjoys 54% of voter support, with Ryan Busse trailing at 33%. Libertarian candidate Kasier Leib polled at 5%, while a portion of respondents remained undecided or favored other unspecified candidates.
