Helena man accused of trying to pawn stolen beaver

A Helena man was charged with felony burglary after an officer recovered and returned a taxidermized beaver to its owner.

Helena police responded about 6 p.m. Sept. 4 to a call regarding an item that was reported stolen from a resident’s garage in the 1300 block of Peosta Avenue.

Police started calling local pawn shops to see if the item was pawned by the defendant.

A pawn shop returned the officer’s call, court documents filed in the Lewis and Clark County Justice Court on Friday state.

A representative at the pawn shop told the officer that Travis Reid Murr, 35, had attempted to pawn the item in question.

Once Murr was identified by the pawn shop employees they told him the police were looking for him, causing him to leave the item behind and flee the shop, documents state. Police also saw video footage of Murr walking into the pawn shop carrying the stuffed beaver.
