Gianforte Honors Sheriff Lonnie Johnson with Veteran Commendation

In a heartfelt ceremony at the Sheridan County Courthouse, Governor Greg Gianforte presented Sheriff Lonnie Johnson with the prestigious 2023 Montana Governor’s Veteran Commendation. Joined by Johnson’s wife and fellow V.F.W. members, the governor acknowledged the sheriff’s dedication to both military and community service.

“I was honored to recognize Sheridan County Sheriff Lonnie Johnson with the 2023 Montana Governor’s Veteran Commendation,” Gov. Gianforte said. “Montana is home to many outstanding veterans, and it’s my privilege to thank them for their service to our country and communities.”

During the ceremony, the governor read a letter highlighting Sheriff Johnson’s extensive service record, which includes time in the U.S. Army and the Montana Army National Guard. In addition to the commendation, Johnson received a Montana state flag that had been flown over the state capitol in his honor.

“I will continue to serve my community, alongside my wife who supports me all the way,” Sheriff Johnson remarked, expressing his humility at receiving the award. “This was a long time coming, but I did not expect this, and I don’t think I deserve it because a veteran is a veteran, and that’s what we do.”

Sheriff Johnson has earned multiple honors throughout his military career, including the Korean Defense and National Defense Service Medals, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Overseas Service Ribbon.

As part of his statewide tour, Governor Gianforte is recognizing veterans nominated by their peers for their military service and exceptional contributions to their communities. This year, 39 recipients of the Montana Governor’s Veteran Commendation are being honored, underscoring the state’s commitment to honoring its veterans.
