Debris burning reopened Saturday in Lewis and Clark County, sheriff says

Lewis and Clark County Sheriff Leo Dutton on Saturday reopened debris burning.

He said on Facebook he consulted with the Lewis and Clark Rural Fire Council and decided to reopen debris burning as of 1 p.m. Saturday.

“This is for organic materials only in Lewis and Clark County,” said Dutton, who also serves as county coroner and fire warden. “We have received enough wetting rain, combined with cooler temperatures to reopen.”

Dutton had extended the prohibition on debris burning beyond an earlier ban, which was to have run from July 1 through Aug. 31. He said it would remain closed until the area received significant moisture.

In Lewis and Clark County, open burning is legally allowed with a permit on private property, according to county code.

Lewis and Clark County commissioners recently lifted Stage 1 fire restrictions in Lewis and Clark County. Dutton said debris burning is separate from those Stage 1 restrictions.
