Clinton man accused of pointing loaded gun, yelling racist profanities at truck driver

Missoula prosecutors have filed felony charges against a Clinton man accused of drunkenly pointing a loaded shotgun at a semi driver at a truck stop and yelling racist profanities at him after nearly running him over.

Jesse Wayne Shoupe, 46, was arrested Sunday and charged with attempted assault with a weapon and criminal endangerment, both of which are felonies. He was also charged with four misdemeanors: a first-offense driving under the influence; driving with a suspended license; failure to carry proof of insurance; and driving with an open container.

He’s being held in the Missoula County Detention Center on $15,000 bail.

Charging documents signed by Deputy Missoula Attorney Mac Bloom claim that Shoupe was stopped by a state trooper at the Travel America truck stop at the Wye on Sept. 1, following a complaint that he was driving drunk.

Shoupe denied drinking that evening, but was argumentative with law enforcement, and had a loaded shotgun and multiple open containers visible inside his vehicle, according to court documents.
