‘Citizen science’: Nonprofit helms Bitterroot River health study

For the last six years, volunteers at the Bitterroot River Protection Association have been working in collaboration with Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), the Bitterroot National Forest and various other organizations to extensively monitor the health of the Bitterroot’s mainstem.

The group will be hosting their annual information meeting on Thursday, Sep. 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the Bedford Building, 223 S 2nd St., in Hamilton. The meeting will be a chance for community members to learn about ongoing research projects, sponsored by the association, happening on the Bitterroot. The meeting will feature guest speaker Brandy Langum, manager of the National Forest Fisheries and Watershed Program, who will be presenting on current aquatic analytic activities being conducted on the Bitterroot and its tributaries.

“Our mission when we established the program back in 2018 was to do some permanent monitoring,” Bitterroot River Protection Association Executive Director Michael Howell said.
