At least 2 UM student-athletes take Montana Together NIL deal

At least two University of Montana student-athletes have signed a deal supporting U.S. Sen. Jon Tester, among the first paid political endorsements by student-athletes in Montana.

The endorsements, the names of the students who accepted were first reported by the Montana Kaimin student newspaper, were a part of a large-scale effort by a political organization called “Montana Together” that is not affiliated with the senator’s campaign to collect UM athlete videos supporting Tester, who is up for reelection.

“The campaign had no knowledge of these actions from an outside group, and we are not in communication with them,” a spokesperson for Tester’s campaign said in a statement Friday.

The group contracted with a third-party Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) company called Opendorse to reach out to all Montana student-athletes through the UM Athletic Department, Athletic Director Kent Haslam told the Missoulian.

Since 2021, collegiate athletes can use their personal brand, or NIL, to make money. Several local businesses have since struck deals with UM athletes.
