Volunteers deploy on M-trail maintenance

Dan Mason, right, and Alexandria Albers work to remove rocks and level out a portion of Mount Sentinel’s “M” trail on Thursday evening. Several volunteers, including a special crew with the Montana Conservation Corps, will be focusing their efforts over the next few months on the final phase of a three-year effort to refurbish the trail from top-to-bottom.

Steve Gaskill, a retired University of Montana professor and volunteer coordinator, is leading the effort to maintain the “M” trail. Gaskill is a former U.S. Olympic cross country ski coach and has been working on various projects in Montana’s outdoor spaces over the past few years.
