Victim of North Dakota truck fire identified

POWERS LAKE, N.D. — Authorities have released the name of a 75-year-old man who died Sunday, Sept. 5, after his pickup truck became stuck in a ditch and caught fire in Mountrail County.

The incident occurred at 7:15 p.m. Sunday, about 4 miles south of Powers Lake in Mountrail County.

Alvin Holmen of Powers Lake was driving a 1997 Ford F150 pickup truck west on 76th Avenue Northwest before drifting into the south ditch, according to the North Dakota Highway Patrol. The vehicle traveled for a short distance and struck a grove of bushes.

Holmen backed the truck up to try to get out of the ditch, but could not, the patrol said. The truck caught fire and was engulfed when firefighters arrived. Holmen died at the scene. It is unknown if he was using a seat belt, according to the patrol.

The crash remains under investigation by the North Dakota Highway Patrol.
