Traffic across Canyon Ferry Dam closed Friday for repairs

The Bureau of Reclamation plans to close traffic across Canyon Ferry Dam on Montana State Highway 284, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday for required repairs.
The temporary road closure is necessary to repair one of the fixed wheel gate hydraulic cylinders, officials said.
State Highway 284 will be closed on both sides of the dam to traffic from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday.

“This is a critical piece of equipment, and repairs must take place as soon as possible by using a crane on the dam crest,” said Dan Stremcha, Canyon Ferry facility manager. “It is important to note that despite the needed repairs, the dam is functioning as designed, and there is no threat to the public.”
Travelers must seek alternate routes north and south of the dam during the closure period. However, emergency vehicles and first responders will be allowed to pass over the dam during the road closure but may face delays of about 15 minutes.
Construction on Canyon Ferry Dam began in May of 1948 and was completed in June of 1954.
