Suspected human remains found in Bass Creek area

A Forest Service crew doing trail work in the Bass Creek area of the Bitterroot National Forest discovered possible human remains on Tuesday.

“Our trail crew was doing a project up there and came across those today,” said Bitterroot National Forest spokesperson Tod McKay.

The report is currently being investigated by the Ravalli County Sheriff’s department. The remains were found in an area searched extensively for a missing person in 2020.

Philip Mathew Stokey of Missoula was reported missing in the area in August of 2020. According to Ravalli County Sheriff Steve Holton searchers put in nearly 400 man-hours searching for Stokey at the time of his disappearance.

Despite the work of Ravalli County Search and Rescue crews and search dog teams, Stokey was never located. Two Bear Air of Kalispell spent nearly 40 hours in the air looking for the man.
