‘Showing our culture’: Last Chance Community Pow Wow hosts hundreds of Helena-area kids

On American Indian Heritage Day, Last Chance Community Pow Wow kicked off festivities Friday at Lewis and Clark County Fairgrounds by welcoming hundreds of area schoolchildren to participate in Native culture.

The annual event, now in its 24th year, always invites local schools to participate as part of its Demonstration Day, but this year’s theme, “Honor the Children,” made the opening ceremonies more special.

Taylor Hayes teaches fourth grade at Bryant Elementary School and said her students are excited to share in a culture different than their own.

“For the last couple of weeks, we talked a lot about what we would be seeing when we came here, the significance behind it,” Hayes said.
