Newt: Founding Fathers Would Have Rejected Impeachment Push

The nation’s founding fathers never thought the power of impeachment should be used as a political tool, and the “pro-impeachment” scholars who will talk during Wednesday’s House Judiciary Committee’s first hearing about impeachment will not present a history that is “accurate,” former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said before the hearings started. 

“I think the scholars who are going to come in who are pro-impeachment (are) going to tell us a lot about their personal ideological bias, but I don’t think their history is accurate,” Gingrich said on Fox News’ “Fox and Friends.” “This is clearly so far below what any of the founding fathers would have considered impeachable that it is almost a joke.”

The nation’s founders would have thought the proceedings in the case of President Donald Trump were “exactly what they did not want to see happen,” he added, “because it reduces the presidency to a daily political fight rather than to be the commander-in-chief of the nation.”

Meanwhile, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has said that she does not think a vote on impeachment will take place before Christmas, and Gingrich said if she doesn’t think it will happen, then it won’t’.
