Missing kayaker’s body recovered from Bitterroot River

The body of a kayaker reported missing Saturday evening after a boating accident was located late Tuesday afternoon, July 11, in a log jam on the Bitterroot River according to a statement released by Ravalli County Sheriff/Coroner Steve Holton.

26-year-old Paige Elise Tomberlin of Denver, Colorado was located with the assistance of Ravalli County Search and Rescue, Flathead County Search and Rescue, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, and equipment operators from Patzer Farms, Holton said.

Tomberlin was located in the same very large log jam she was last seen in when her kayak capsized near Poker Joe Fishing Access south of Florence. Dog teams were used Tuesday morning and with the expertise of Flathead County Search and Rescue swift-water divers, it was determined that removing the log jam was necessary. Equipment operators and the divers worked to remove the log jam throughout the afternoon and were able to retrieve the victim’s body shortly after 4 p.m.
