Escapee charged with homicide in 2022 Billings South Side shooting

Yellowstone County prosecutors have filed criminal charges following a homicide on the South Side of Billings.

Branden Kord Rock Above, 23, has pleaded not guilty to accusations of fatally shooting a man in the South Side of Billings in November 2022.

Branden Kord Rock Above, 23, pleaded not guilty this week in Yellowstone County to one count of deliberate homicide. Rock Above appeared in court via teleconference from Montana State Prison, with his most recent criminal charges coming nearly a year after a Hardin man was fatally shot on South 29th Street.

On Nov. 5, 2022, officers with the Billings Police Department responded to a collision on the 200 block of South 29th Street between an SUV and a sedan, court documents said. Inside the SUV, they found 31-year-old Walker Takes Horse sitting in the driver’s seat. He had a gunshot wound to his neck. Crews took him to a local hospital where he was soon pronounced dead.
