Contractor banned from doing business in North Dakota

FARGO — A judge has banned contractor Steve Mitchell and his company FM Mechanical from doing business in North Dakota.

Cass County District Judge Reid Brady issued the ban Sept. 3 after finding Mitchell broke consumer fraud and licensing laws, according to the office of North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem. The ruling came after the state’s consumer protection division took legal action against Mitchell.

The judge determined Mitchell was operating without a contractor’s license and did poor quality work, the attorney general’s office said.

The judge found Mitchell violated a May 2020 agreement with the state that required him to refund $8,000 owed to a consumer, the attorney general’s office said. The judge also ordered him to pay $3,982 to other affected consumers.

Reached by phone Monday, Mitchell declined to comment on the allegations against him.
