Brainerd man faces murder charge in shooting death of woman at resort

BRAINERD, Minn. — A 29-year-old Brainerd man faces a murder charge for the shooting death of a woman Thursday, Oct. 7, at Cozy Bay Resort on Lake Edward north of Merrifield, Minnesota.

Cameron Jay Moser was charged Monday, Oct. 11, in Crow Wing County District Court with felony second-degree murder with intent but not premeditation in connection with the shooting death of Bethany Anne Bernatsky.

It was not clear from the criminal complaint filed against Moser whether he and Bernatsky knew each other or what the motive was for the shooting. The complaint stated Moser had familiarity with Cozy Bay Resort as he used to be in a relationship with the previous owners’ daughter, and the previous week he had been at the nearby Mollie Lake RV Park asking about her.

According to the criminal complaint filed against Moser:

At 11:04 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, Crow Wing County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to Cozy Bay Resort for a shooting complaint. The person making the complaint reported hearing numerous gunshots inside and outside an adjoining cabin. Two other people called 911 after hearing the gunshots and made reports.
