It was a tough day for both Grand Forks prep football teams on Friday.
Fargo Shanley, ranked No. 5 in Class AA, rolled to a 61-0 win over short-handed Grand Forks Central at Cushman Field before West Fargo, ranked No. 3 in Class AA, took down Grand Forks Red River 42-8, a game also played at Cushman.
Both Central and Red River are Class A programs, meaning the losses didn’t drastically affect their postseason chances.
Central dropped to 2-5 overall while Red River slipped to 3-4. Both teams have two games remaining in the regular season.
“We’re still in contention for the playoffs,” said Central coach Bill Lorenz.
The Knights, however, lost one of their top players in the first half as receiver Sam Strandell, who committed to UND earlier this week, was sidelined with an arm injury.
Shanley led 28-0 at half and returned the second-half opening kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown.
Red River’s lone touchdown came from Paine Parks, who caught a 3-yard scoring strike from Gunnar Heuchert in the fourth quarter. Parks,
