President Biden cast California’s impending gubernatorial recall in existential terms during his stump speech for Governor Gavin Newsom Monday night, repeatedly comparing conservative radio host Larry Elder to former president Trump and insisting that a Newsom victory was required to fend off a broader Republican takeover.

While many Republican candidates have challenged Newsom, Elder is the frontrunner going into the Tuesday election.

Addressing the crowd at a Newsom campaign rally in Long Beach Monday night, Biden labeled Elder “the clone of Donald Trump.”

“Can you imagine him being governor of this state?” Biden asked. The audience replied, “No, no!”

“You can’t let that happen. There is too much at stake,” he said.
